About

Mighty Max was a toyline initially released in the UK by company Blue Bird Toys. Due to the popuarity of thier Polly Pocket line of miniture figure playsets, Blue Bird decided to create a similar line for boys. The line was successful enough to gain the notice of Mattel, who eventually bought out Blue Bird.

Like many toy lines of the 90's, Max has his own TV show that lasted for two years (and had one of the coolest intros ever), as well as a video games and other non-toy merchandise. If you'd like to learn more about the history of Max you can do so via this article I wrote on my Substack.

Max is my favorite toy line. I adore the little self-contained worlds, the mini figures, and the incredible detail that each playset has, especially given their diminutive size. It was the first thing I remember activley wanting to collect. If you'd like to check it out, I've written another artice on why Max is so important to me.

Unlike his "sister" Polly, Max has not had a resurgence since the line ended in 1996. There have been a few glimmers of hope, such as when Mattel said the line has the "opportunity to be reinvented," but nothing has ever come of these.

As it stands my collection is almost complete, only missing a few of the rare/ more expesnive sets. Unless prices drastically drop, however, this is unlikely to change.

Note:I realise that some of the photos on this page are pretty bad. They were taken a long while ago and I really need to update them. It'll happen...eventually. ^_^

Battle Warriors

Doom Zones

Horror Heads

Large Playsets

Shrunken Heads

Other Playsets

As the same suggests, play sets that don't quite fit into the other categories.

The first three images are of Hairy Heads. These are slightly bigger than Shrunken Heads but the head is the monster as there is not "interiour" to it. Max sits inside the monster's mouth.

The fourth image is of a McDonald's Happy Meal playset (there is apparently also a blue variant) while the fifth is of a Monster Head. Similar to Hairy Heads in that Monster Heads are mostly static, but they do have a removable monster and Max mini figure.

The last two images are two of my favorite pieces of the collection. They are essentially miniturised versions of the Doom Dragon and Skull Dungeon Doom Zones with a digital display added.

They close up just like regular playsets although, obviously, they are too small for mini figures (although they do come with a Max). If the bands were large enough for my wrists I would totally wear these around today! There is apparently a Glega Guts watch as well, but I've never seen one.

Comics

In 1994, Marvel UK released the series Adventures of Mighty Max, a monthly comic magazine that contained multiple stories as well as activities. It lasted for 10 issues. The 0 issue is often stated to be part of the Marvel UK series, but this is incorrect. It was simply a promotional comic that came with copies of the Adventures of Mighty Max video game. It is not connected to the Marvel UK series apart from sharing the licence.

And The Rest...
